Where to eat whole king crab in Punta Arenas

What to ask, what to tell apart and what to expect before ordering a whole king crab in the capital of Magallanes.

By Redacción THE WHOLE Published: Updated: Next review:

Ordering a whole king crab in Punta Arenas is a different decision from ordering "king crab" as such. Whole means the entire animal arrives, that there is table service around it, that the price goes up, and that the venue must have worked with live or freshly cooked product. It is a long, hour-plus meal, not a quick dish.

The three questions that settle it

  • Is it centolla (Lithodes santolla) or centollón (Paralomis granulosa)? They are different species, different in size and price, and the confusion is routine.
  • Does it come whole, as claws, or picked? Price and experience change completely.
  • Is it fresh or frozen? Neither is a flaw. Serving frozen out of season is legitimate; not saying so is not.

Why this page does not yet hand you a list of restaurants

THE WHOLE publishes a single restaurant with a structured record in this first edition. Speechless Patagonia has a confirmed address, hours, menu, price range and booking channels, but today’s king crab availability still requires direct confirmation. One verified record is not enough to manufacture a "best places" ranking.

Season and closures

The Magallanes king crab fishery is subject to closed seasons and management measures set by the fisheries authority, which change between seasons. We do not publish dates as if they were ours: the window shown on the product record is marked indicative and must be confirmed with SUBPESCA before organising a trip around it.

Can I eat whole king crab out of season?

Usually yes, frozen. What you should not accept is being sold it as fresh when it is not. Asking is enough: a serious venue answers without difficulty.
