Where to eat in Puerto Natales
A waypoint town with sharp seasonality and three hours of road from its supply line.
Puerto Natales lives off the flow towards Torres del Paine, and that defines its cooking more than anything else. The town fills and empties with the park’s calendar, and its supplies arrive by road from Punta Arenas, about three hours away.
The practical consequence is that opening hours matter more than choice. Outside the austral summer part of the offer shortens hours or closes, and an excellent place that is shut is of no use.
What people look for here is not only lamb
Visitors arrive expecting lamb and king crab, and they will find them. But among the fastest-growing queries about Puerto Natales over the past year are «puerto natales restaurants», «sushi puerto natales» and «what to do in puerto natales». What is growing is demand for a town that solves dinner after five days of trekking, whatever the dish.
What to settle before arriving
- The hours for the day you arrive, not the general hours. Off season they change week to week.
- If you return from the park late, ask until when they serve, not until when they open.
- If you travel off season, confirm the same day. A booking made a month ago does not guarantee the place is open.
Better to dine in Natales or wait for Punta Arenas?
If you are heading to the park, dine in Natales: it is the last town with full services. If you are returning, it depends on your bus time. Punta Arenas has more open off season because it is the regional capital, but it is three hours away and does not solve tonight’s hunger.
